Seton Hall has a Mobile Computing program where all incoming freshmen receive 'standard' laptops. The laptops come installed with a recent version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, such as Windows XP, as well as with a wealth of software packages such as Microsoft Office, Maple, SPSS, and others.

The LiLa project attempts to turn all Seton Hall laptops into "dual-boot" machines so that they:

can start either the Microsoft Windows or Linux operating system
the same data can be accessed regardless of which operating system you use
software is available to open data saved from a Windows application with a corresponding Linux application and visa versa
where possible free and Open Source software is used for the Linux operating system

The idea behind this project is two-fold:

near-term: to provide a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows and to enable the use of Unix (Linux) based software, in particular for the sciences
long-term: to test the feasibility of using a free Operating System and associated software packages at the desktop level for all Seton Hall computers and users
