Upgrade to OpenOffice 1.1.0

The software installed on our IBM R31 and R40 models includes OpenOffice 1.0.2, which is the default for Redhat 9.0. Since we created the laptop image, however, a new version of OpenOffice was released that has some significant advantages over version 1.0.2:

better import/export of Microsoft Office documents
one-step export to PDF documents
easy export of Presentations to Flash applications, ready for Web use

The new version of OpenOffice will be integrated into the next laptop image, but it is easy to to upgrade OpenOffice yourself without modifying the rest of your laptop. Here are easy, step-by-step instructions, we recommend doing this as soon as possible:

Boot into Linux, close all OpenOffice programs, if any, and start the Mozilla web browser
Download openoffice1.1.0.tar.gz (120 MB) to your home directory (the default location when you click the link) and wait until the download is complete
Download openoffice-install.exe (4KB) to your home directory as well
Open a "terminal window" by right-clicking on the background of the desktop and selecting "New Terminal"
Click on the terminal window and type, exactly as shown:
  sh openoffice-install.exe

to execute the installation script. Then follow the online instructions to finish the installation.

When installation is done you can click on any of the Open Office icons to start the new version.
