Core Courses
Part C of the Arts and Sciences Core Curriculum statues that "all students must demonstrate competence in college-level mathematics. Remedial courses do not count for graduation credit."
Specifically, Students need to take at least one of the following courses (plus prerequisites, if necessary):
- MATH 1101 Statistical Concepts and Methods
- MATH 1102 Mathematical Perspectives
- MATH 1202 Mathematical Models in the Social Sciences
- MATH 1203 Statistical Models for the Social Sciences
- MATH 1303 Quantitative Methods for Business and Economic Students
- MATH 1401 Calculus I
- MATH 1501 Honors Calculus I
Who should take Which Core Course
Different departments recommend and/or require different mathematics courses to satisfy the core and to give students the necessary skills required for a particular major. Students should check with the chair of their Major department for details, or consult the following table.
Student's Major Recommended MATH course African American Studies - AFAM MATH 1101 or MATH 1203 or MATH 1102 Anthropology and Sociology - ANTH, SOCI MATH 1203 Art & Music - ARMU MATH 1102 or MATH 1101 Asian Studies - ASIA any Biology - BIOL MATH 1401 or MATH 1501 Chemistry and Biochemistry - CHEM MATH 1401 or MATH 1501 Classical Studies - CLAS MATH 1102 or MATH 1101 Communication - COMM MATH 1102 or MATH 1101 OR MATH 1203 Criminal Justice - CRIM MATH 1203 English - ENGL MATH 1102 or MATH 1101 History - HIST MATH 1102 or MATH 1101 Mathematics & Computer Science - MATH, CSAS MATH 1501 Modern Languages - MOLG MATH 1102 or MATH 1101 Philosophy - PHIL Physics - PHYS MATH 1401 or MATH 1501 Political Science - POLS MATH 1203 Psychology - PSYC MATH 1202 Religious Studies - RELS MATH 1102 or MATH 1101 Social Work - SOWK MATH 1203 BA Economics MATH 1303 BA Liberal Arts Occupational Therapy MATH 1101 Diplomacy MATH 1203 or MATH 1101 Business MATH 1303 Education depends on second major Nursing MATH 1101
Undecided Arts Students
- If considering any science, math, or computer science, take MATH 1401 or MATH 1501
- If not, and considering business or ECON, take MATH 1303
- If not, and considering any social science or DIPL, take MATH 1203
- If not, and considering AFAM or COMM, take MATH 1102 or MATH 1101 or MATH 1203
- If not, take MATH1101 or MATH 1102
Undecided Science Students
- should go into MATH 1401 or a course leading up to that (i.e. MATH 1014 or MATH 1015).
Note:
- Some MATH core courses are more "universal" than others, in particular, MATH 1101 works for many majors, as does MATH 1102 for "liberal arts"-leaning students. MATH 1202, on the other hand, is only for PSYC majors.
- The above list shows recommendations only. Please check with individual departments for the MATH courses they require.
- If a recommended course has prerequisites and a student can not take the recommended course, the student should take that course listed as prerequisite instead.
